Best Winter Jackets for Kids [Updated for 2017!]

I’ve asked my favorite group of #OutdoorFamily Bloggers for their favorite winter jackets and below are the results!

This post is newly updated [as 2016/2017] and these are tried and tested, used, spilled on, washed, and (when applicable) passed on to siblings. These are the jackets that tag along on our adventures and we would consider “worth the money.”

  1. Wow, so many neat jackets to pick from!! I will bookmark this for next year when both boys will outgrow their current jackets (a Northface on the older one, this is year three in the jacket), and the younger in a Columbia jacket (year two for him). Love all the details that go into so many of these jackets. We have had lots of success as well with Patagonia and in the snow pants department love Helly Hansen.

    • Thanks for sharing. I’ve heard great things about the North Face Jackets and Columbia as well. I’ve been wanting to try out a kids Columbia puffy. In our snow pant department we love Columbia and Trespass (a little known brand but awesome).

  2. Hey thanks for sharing these! (Side note: it is NOT safe to buckle kids into carseats with wintercoats on.. totally get the compressability for strollers and other types of harnesses but there have been some good studies out about the dangers of children in carseats with coats on. They tend to slide out of the carseat unless the straps are directly on their shoulders… Thought I would mention it.. no big deal.. )

    • You are definitely right! My brother strapped his baby into her carseat, in her coat, and the compression along with being too bundled made her stop breathing… they caught her just in time to save her life!

  10. how is one able to financially do all of those wonderful things? I can hardly put food on my table. I would love to afford a warm jacket for my child but there is no way I can afford any of these jacket s . Any ideas?

    • I agree, a good jacket for kids can be expensive. We’ve lucked out by knowing the above brands are good quality and then looking for deals on palces such as Sierratradingpost.com, REI garage, etc during the warmer season. Since it is now winter, that won’t help much but I can suggest SnoCru – a brand often carried t Costco – longevity might be compromised but I know many people have had good luck there.
