We piled on the couch, my mom on the phone in one hand, the remote in the other. We were trying to find the US Figure Skating Live Coverage and as usual, having a hard time. But finally, between the two households, we found it.
Shortly after coverage started I overheard this side comment from the kitchen where I was making a hot cup of tea:
Experience the magic of going back to unlearned things.
See we spend so much time worrying about what we know, what we’ve mastered, what our kids know and master, that I think we often forget the magic found in NOT knowing something. Let me explain.
Have you ever tackled something hard? A challenge or something you weren’t quite sure you could succeed at? Sure, there is uncertainty and insecurity in those moments before you commit to taking on that challenge. But there is also amazing potential. You have, in that moment, the power to choose, to strive after something, to figure out what you don’t know so that you might know it.
It could be a race, hiking a mountain, learning to paint, or learning a new sport. This magic of unlearned things applies to the toddler who can’t run yet, the kid who cannot catch a ball, the mom who wants to start her own business or the grandmother who wants to learn to figure skate. 🙂 It applies to the un-athletic and the super athletic.
Last month I joined the Snowbasin Divas for three all-women’s clinics for advanced skiers. It has been YEARS since I was in a position to be instructed on my skiing rather than doing the instructing. It was awesome, empowering and reminded me how much fun it is to learn and progress. Even the most accomplished and unaccomplished amongst us can all stand knee deep in the magic of unlearned things.
A year ago my mother had hip replacement surgery. And after the initial PT she informed me she was taking up figure skating again (she skated as a child). In my mind a new hip did not equal learning to figure skate! But why not?!
She was joining a few other women and taking weekly lessons. She purchased new skates and her enthusiasm has spread throughout the family. She was taking on her unlearned thing and it wasn’t long before my youngest daughter Esme snatched up a pair of old skates given to her by that same grandmother and declared her intent to learn to skate.
Cirque Du Soleil Crystal
Part of learning new things for our family is exposing our kids to different places, activities and art. And that is why I am so excited to tell you about this new show coming to Utah. This unique arena production—Cirque du Soleil’s first-ever experience on ice— showcases synchronized, freestyle and extreme skating alongside circus disciplines such as swinging trapeze, aerial straps and hand-to-hand.
